The Pocheon Hillmaru Country Club is located outside the rural town of Pocheon-si, South Korea. The owner asked us to develop a programmatic design that is both environmentally conscious and efficiently satisfies the athletic requirements of a 700-acre (283-hectare), 45-hole golf course.
Due to its size and expected number of visitors per day, the clubhouse accommodates approximately 1,000 private lockers, 200 electric cart storage spaces, and a luxury restaurant for up to 300 patrons. Additionally, the lobby space has a large atrium and a canopy that spans over the four-lane drop-off zone. We developed numerous potential siting plans that utilize these programmatic requirements in dynamic ways. The central lobby hosts the largest space in the facility, dividing the restaurant, office, and locker room areas into separate zones. These locker room sections are divided to accommodate members, VIPs, and exclusive VIPs. Each section has its own relaxation/recovery area, hot tubs, and ice baths, with full views of the courses. Statistics indicated that more than two-thirds of golf members are male, thus we designed a section of the second-floor female locker area to be adapted into an extra locker room space for males, if needed. After finding ways to optimize the total training space, we found that locker width of 19.7 inches (500 millimeters) was most efficient. Aesthetically, we attempted to integrate a traditional Korean design precedent into this contemporary golfing facility. A Blumer-Lehmann Glulam structure was used for the whalelike form roof structures. The roof structure has a sloped 9.84- foot (3-meter) overhang, a design detail common in traditional Korean roof structures. The clubhouse’s roof is sheathed with a zinc metal and its exterior wall has a stone-clad finish. Within the building, the beams, eaves, and rafters all utilize laminated wood. |
