An addition and renovation of existing Korean National Cultural Heritage Building No. 91, ‘Donam Jang’. The original ‘Hanok’ style wooden structure was built in 1939 and the pseudo concrete ‘Hanok’ addition was built in 1974. The owner asked us to design an addition connected to the 1974 addition on a small site adjacent to the existing addition. Because the original building in ‘Hanok’ style had an extensive outer wall connected to the new site, we had to come up with a material that resembles ‘old’ & ‘timeless’ quality of the entire structure. Our choice was to utilize ‘used’ brick imported from the demolished ‘old’ structures from China. The new building is a ‘humble’ and ‘minimal’ in character, fit into the ‘materiality’ of the existing. We have also structurally modified the 1974 addition to house all the modern requirements by the Owner. The result is a seamless , efficient and timeless modern living apparatus supporting the National treasure.
